JIMMY PAGE: 'I Want To Be Seen To Be Playing' The Guitar
June 6, 2014Liz Barnes, programme manager at the U.K. digital radio station Planet Rock, recently conducted an interview with legendary LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page. You can now watch the chat in three parts below.
Asked if he still picks up a guitar at home and plays, Page replied: "Yeah, but it doesn't make any difference what I'm doing at home on the guitar. What makes a difference is — quite clearly, in this whole visual age — that you are seen to be playing."
He continued: "I've been working on these LED ZEPPELIN [releases] like 'Celebration Day', for example, over the last couple of years or so, and also all of [the deluxe reissues of the band's albums]. And these releases are timed to be going out, but I'm going to be working on the guitar because I want to be seen to be playing. Because I had certain priorities that I wanted to do, and I definitely wanted to make sure that this [ZEPPELIN reissue campaign] would sail, and now it is, and we're talking about it, so that's good. But I wanna be seen to be playing. So that's in, not close future, but in relative near future compared to LED ZEPPELIN releases in the past. It'll be a bit closer."
As previously reported, Robert Plant mocked Page's recent remarks regarding Plant's on-again, off-again interest in a LED ZEPPELIN reunion. Last month, Page, who is promoting the deluxe reissues of the first three ZEPPELIN albums, finally came out and blamed Plant for being the bandmember thwarting any hopes of a ZEPPELIN reunion tour. During a lengthily interview with The New York Times, Page said, "I was told last year that Robert Plant said he is doing nothing in 2014, and what do the other two guys think? Well, he knows what the other guys think. Everyone would love to play more concerts for the band. He's just playing games, and I'm fed up with it, to be honest with you. I don't sing, so I can't do much about it. It just looks so unlikely, doesn't it?"
During Plant's recent press conference in Morocco to publicize his side band, the SENSATIONAL SPACE SHIFTERS' shows, Plant addressed Page's comments, saying, "He needs to go to sleep and have a good rest, and think again. We have a great history together and like all brothers we have these moments where we don't speak on the same page, but that's life."
Page has run into the same problems with Robert Plant over the years. Back in 2000, Page told The Pulse Of Radio that trying keep Plant interested in their work as a duo had finally proved futile. "And in the end, I just lost... y'know, I thought, 'I can't keep trying to motivate somebody if they just definitely don't seem to want to know.' So, at the moment, there isn't any plans to do anything with Robert."
